Conditions Treated
At the Pulse Practice we treat a wide range of conditions, whether from injury, strain or general aches and pains.
If you're looking for further information of specific treatments related to your condition, please click on the treatments here to see an overview of each treatment.
Whatever the cause, the pain is usually quite restricting. Treatment should be sought ASAP.

Ostenil (Hyaluronic Acid) Injections
Osteoarthritis (OA) is caused by the deterioration or damage of the synovial joints. These joints are encased in a capsule filled with synovial fluid, which acts as a lubricant for our body’s joints, preventing them from wearing down by acting as a kind of shock absorber.
OA occurs when the breakdown of the synovial fluid occurs more rapidly than it is replaced. Unprotected, the joint becomes worn down, causing swelling, pain and stiffness.
The main component of synovial fluid is Hyaluronic Acid (HA). OSTENIL® contains a high level of HA, which can be injected into synovial joints. It works by mimicking the body’s natural lubrication known to promote joint health.
At Pulse Practice, we use OSTENIL to relieve pain and improve mobility in osteoarthritic joints of the knee and other large synovial joints such as the hip and the shoulder. It can also be used in smaller degenerative joints such as the base of the thumb.
OSTENIL has been proven to be effective in reducing pain and the need for painkillers, and improving mobility.
WHAT IS HYALURONIC ACID (HA) IN JOINTS?
Intra-articular hyaluronic acid (IAHA) is a substance that is used as a treatment for knee osteoarthritis. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occurring compound found in the body, which acts as a lubricant and shock absorber in the joints. In osteoarthritis, the hyaluronic acid in the joint becomes thinner and less effective, leading to pain and stiffness.
TREATMENT
IAHA treatment involves injecting a synthetic form of hyaluronic acid into the joint. The goal is to supplement the natural hyaluronic acid and improve the joint’s lubrication and shock-absorbing abilities. This can help to reduce pain and improve mobility.
IAHA is usually done as a series of injections with a gap of 1-2 weeks.
When there is a clear benefit, repeated injections do not damage the joint or have diminishing potential to help.
We’re proud to offer a variety of different ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injections. After thorough clinical assessment, these types of injections are commonly used anti-inflammatory medications delivered directly to the structure causing your pain.
Often called ‘steroid’ or ‘cortisone’ injections, they are valuable procedures for managing musculoskeletal conditions.
Corticosteroid injections can be intraarticular, periarticular, or around soft tissue structures such as bursae or nerves to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, improve mobility and recruit muscles to better rehab.
Injections can also provide diagnostic information and are frequently used for postoperative or chronic limb pain control.
We can combine local anaesthetics with corticosteroids to provide additional, rapid pain relief, or hyaluronic acid to both control pain and improve lubrication (something called viscosupplementation).
CASES THAT CAN BENEFIT FROM STEROID INJECTIONS:
-
Wrist: (de Quervain’s and intersection syndrome) in tenosynovitis or carpal tunnel syndrome
-
Elbow epicondylitis (tennis and golfer’s elbow)
-
Shoulder (rotator cuff syndrome, subacromial pain syndrome, impingement)
-
Hip (with lateral trochanteric bursitis)
-
Osteoarthritis (of many joints, thumb, shoulder, knee, etc, often combined with vicsocupplementation)
-
Rheumatoid arthritis (eg intrarticular shoulder injections)
-
Crystal arthropathies (eg Gout, pseudogout)
Complications from steroid injections are rare and our clinicians will discuss the benefit versus the minimal risk openly with you.
Patients with diabetes who receive periarticular or soft tissue steroid injections should closely monitor their blood glucose for two weeks following injection as they can effect glucose control temporarily
